Fluffy rolls with a blend of green tea belong to traditional Japanese cuisine, where taste experiences are closely accompanied by a strong visual impression. For one of the producers of these pastry specialties, the Tokyo studio aoydesign designed a production building where rolls can also be purchased and tasted. The small object is located in the midst of the quiet residential neighborhood of Komatsu on the northwestern coast of Japan. Its dimensions blend in with the surrounding houses. The only indication of the roll factory is an inconspicuous calligraphic abbreviation at the entrance. What sets the building apart from the surroundings is its shape, consisting of three gentle sloping roofs. The elongated structure rises toward the center, from where there is a view of the sky through the roof windows. The slope of the roof plays a significant role in this area with substantial snowfall. Both the roof and the exterior walls are covered with asphalt shingles. The shop extends with a funnel-shaped neck up to the road, where it 'sucks in' customers. The interior features a combination of white-painted walls, dark-colored built-in furniture, and wooden floors. The total area of the entire operation, including production, sales, and storage, does not take up more than 40 m².
