Chicago - The prestigious Pritzker Prize, considered one of the most significant awards in the field of architecture, has been awarded this year to Chilean Alejandro Aravena. The organizers announced this today. The jury particularly recognized the 48-year-old creator for his public building and social housing projects, in which he systematically emphasizes ecological sustainability, the influence of buildings on the formation of society and interpersonal relationships, and technological innovations.

"The jury selected an architect who deepens our understanding of what truly constitutes exceptional design. Alejandro Aravena is a pioneer of a collaborative approach, resulting in strong architecture that reflects the challenges of the 21st century. His buildings provide economic opportunities for the less privileged, mitigate the impacts of natural disasters, reduce energy consumption, and create friendly public spaces. His innovative and inspiring architectural work is proof that construction can improve human lives," the jurors stated in their announcement.

Aravena is the 41st laureate of the Pritzker Prize, sometimes referred to as the Nobel Prize for architecture. Last year, the award was given to German architect Frei Otto.

Over the past 20 years, Aravena has made a name for himself, particularly with the design of school buildings and facilities, whether it was the headquarters of the medical faculty, mathematics faculty, and the school of architecture in Santiago de Chile, or the dorms of St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. In 2006, he was instrumental in founding the creative initiative Elemental, which gradually became a recognized studio focusing on infrastructure, transportation, public spaces, and housing projects.

The Elemental studio and its leader Aravena strive to design various low-cost social housing systems in collaboration with government offices and local authorities, so that even the poorest segments of the population can obtain dignified housing. He places emphasis on sustainability and ecology.

Aravena will also promote his vision as the president of this year's Venice Architecture Biennale, which takes place from the end of May to the end of November.
