In an international competition for the design of a new district in the Spanish city of Vigo, the project of Parisian architect Jean Nouvel was victorious. The port district named Peirao XXI is expected to become a showcase for this Galician city. Nouvel proposes to clad the entire harbor area in granite. The most dominant building of the entire design reaches a height of 90 meters and resembles a menhir, which is to house a hotel, conference center, offices, and restaurants. The entire concept plans to transform the harbor into a residential area and a place for leisure activities. There are also plans to extend the urban boulevard into the open sea, where the street will end at the aforementioned "menhir." The use of granite in the design represents a reference to local architecture and the landscape of northern Spain. Among the many buildings, there are also five residential blocks resembling a small village in their layout. However, the function of these blocks will quite prosaically be offices and restaurants with shops on the ground floor. Other planned structures include a swimming pool, yacht club, relaxation center, museum, and a pedestrian bridge. The total investment has a budget of 260 million euros (7.5 billion CZK). The proposed traffic adjustments will consume an additional 20 million.
The jury deliberated between eighteen competitive projects. In second place behind Nouvel was the proposal of David Chipperfield, and the third was the local office PG Planificación Global de Proyectos. Link>
