On Thursday, October 21, 2010, a new lecture hall was opened on the RWTH campus. The introductory lecture was on the topic "Symmetry in Crystallographic Rotation." The official opening of the building, which originally served as a university power plant, is scheduled for November 4, 2011. The gaps in the facade made of aluminum slats are illuminated at night with warm orange-red neon, thus reminding of its original function - a source of heat for the university. In the raised block measuring 28m (height), 11m (width), and 34m (length), there are two lecture halls for 200 attendees, as well as multi-purpose spaces and seminar rooms, covering an area of 950m². White steel beams are separated from the orange concrete walls inside the building. Of the total amount of 8.7 million euros needed for the reconstruction, five million was paid from tuition fees. The renovated section adjoins the dilapidated part of the old heating plant, the remediation of which is planned for 2020.
