St. Petersburg - Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, the third largest air hub in Russia, is set to undergo extensive reconstruction. The project to connect the terminals for domestic and international flights and the overall modernization has been proposed by the British architectural firm Grimshaw and Partners. This was reported by today's online edition of The St. Petersburg Times. The improved St. Petersburg airport is expected to have greater capacity and, thanks to the reconstruction, provide better service to passengers so that it can better compete with the two Moscow airports, Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo. The reconstruction is estimated to cost about 470 million dollars (approximately 9.5 billion crowns). The main feature of the reconstructed airport will be an elegant wavy roof that will cover both of the currently functioning terminals. The design is by British architect Nicholas Thomas Grimshaw and his studio. Sixty-eight-year-old Grimshaw is building in Britain and across Europe, and he is almost a specialist in transportation infrastructure. He is the author of the international railway station Waterloo in London, the terminals of London Heathrow Airport, and the terminal at Manchester Airport.
