In the Polish city of Szczecin, an international competition took place for a new roofing structure for the summer stage in Kasprowicz City Park. Out of the original sixteen proposals, five projects advanced to the second round, from which the variant by the London studio Flanagan Lawrence was selected. The main goal of the competition was to replace the existing textile covering over the grandstand, expand the roof over the spectator stands, improve lighting and acoustic conditions, and increase the utilization of the entire area. The design considers the possibility of hosting performances also during the winter months. A ticket office with a café will be added to the complex. The outdoor amphitheater, named after Polish singer Helena Majdaniec, is dominated by a characteristic concrete arch designed by Szczecin architect Zbigniew Abrahamowicz in the 1970s. However, after the completion of the reconstruction, which is planned for 2018, the arch will only serve as decoration, as the newly designed inflatable roof will have its own supporting structure.
