Yogyakarta (Indonesia) - The Borobudur Temple, which is the largest Buddhist monument in the world, appears to have suffered no damage from today's powerful earthquake in Indonesia. The sanctuary is located on the Indonesian island of Java, just 40 kilometers northwest of the city of Yogyakarta, where thousands of buildings collapsed, resulting in more than 3,000 fatalities.

The Borobudur Temple, whose black construction stone gives it a somewhat fearsome appearance, was built in the 9th century and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Indonesia, attracting millions of visitors each year.
Borobudur apparently escaped destruction, noted local official Kuntung about the temple, which, for reasons not yet clarified, was abandoned for centuries, hidden under layers of volcanic ash from the nearby Merapi volcano and dense jungle foliage. This monument was rediscovered during the British occupation of Java in 1814, and extensive restoration of the site was carried out and financed by UNESCO in the 1970s.
In contrast, according to reports from local media, several sanctuaries in the Hindu temple complex of Prambanan, located 36 kilometers southeast of Yogyakarta, did not share the same fortune today.
The extent of damage to the buildings is not yet known; however, according to AFP, numerous sculptural and carving works with religious themes have reportedly collapsed. Eyewitnesses quoted by BBC's website stated that the main building was spared from devastation.
Prambanan, which includes about 250 individual sanctuaries, is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. It was built in the 8th-10th centuries but was also abandoned shortly after and began to deteriorate. Restoration began in 1918 and has not been completed to this day.
Both Borobudur and Prambanan are on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
