Lima - The remains of an ancient complex of buildings have been discovered by Peruvian archaeologists on Huanacaure mountain, which the ancient Incas considered sacred and is connected to legends about the origins of their civilization. According to the EFE agency, ruins of dwellings, stone walls up to 2.5 meters high, as well as burial chambers (chullpy), sarcophagi, and remains of pottery were found in the area.
The expedition managed to explore about a tenth of the area, which is located at an altitude of over 3,000 meters above sea level near the village of Pampa Alegre in the Huánuco province. The team leader, Lázaro Torres, recalled that Huanacaure mountain "directly references Incan mythology, specifically the brothers Ayara in nearby Cuzco". This is one of the legends about the founding of the Empire of the four parts, which was undertaken by a quartet of brothers.
"I believe that this mountain, covered with vegetation, with stone formations, petroglyphs, and archaeological sites, held special significance for the greatest empire ever established in South America," Torres noted.
Researchers also found a rectangular ceremonial platform on the mountain, oriented towards the main cardinal points, as well as Incan ceremonial structures called ushnu. These stone structures were reserved solely for Incan rulers when they participated in various ceremonies or rituals.
The mountain, which is completely hidden beneath the vegetation of the so-called Peruvian mountain jungle, boasts a very rich fauna and flora. Many species of orchids can be found there, as well as pumas, jaguars, and rare birds, such as the Peruvian national feathered Andean condor.
