In the eight-million-strong metropolis of Shenzhen in southern China, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition (MOCAPE) will be ceremoniously opened on Sunday, September 25, 2016. The museum was designed by the Vienna-based architectural office Coop Himmelb(l)au based on the winning competition proposal from 2007. The external regular shape begins to twist and increasingly collapse toward the center of the building until it transforms into an abstract "silver cloud" with a perfectly smooth mirrored surface without visible seams.
Inside one structure, there are two completely different institutions connected by a covered courtyard elevated ten meters above the surrounding terrain. From the atrium, there is access to conference halls, multipurpose halls, and lecture rooms. The main feature of the central space, which also provides spatial orientation within the building, is the “silver cloud” interspersed with a series of staircases, ramps, and bridges. The cloud also houses a café and a bookstore.
The external cladding of the massive steel structure consists of stone slabs and panels made of perforated sheet metal.
