The Hudson Yards project rising on the west side of Manhattan is one of the most ambitious development projects in American history. The vast area with thirty former railway sidings is set to be completely transformed by 2024. Sixteen skyscrapers will be constructed in phases, with a total floor area of 1.2 million square feet of new apartments, offices, and stores. In addition, a six-hectare public park will be created. The urban plan was developed by the firm KPF, which is also the author of two skyscrapers (10 Hudson Yards, 30 Hudson Yards) completed in the first phase, to be followed by 35 Hudson Yards by SOM and 15 Hudson Yards by DS+R. Construction of the latter skyscraper has just begun in these days. Although the original design had to be modified and the final form is significantly rationalized, it still appears to be the most elegant within the entire complex. DS+R has collaborated with New York architect David Rockwell on the project for the seventy-story tower with 385 apartments. The skyscraper is located at the corner of 30th Street and 11th Avenue in connection with High Line and in close proximity to the cultural and artistic district. Trains will continue to pass under the skyscraper to the nearby Penn Station during the construction, which is expected to be completed in 2018.
