Exactly 80 years ago, a large residential complex named Karl-Marx-Hof was ceremoniously opened. On October 12, 1930, it was inaugurated by the then mayor of Vienna, Karl Seitz, in the presence of a great interest from the city's inhabitants, tens of thousands of people. The museum "Das Rote Wien im Waschsalon" has prepared a special publication featuring press articles, debates, and caricatures from the time of the creation of the most significant building of the so-called Red Vienna for this anniversary. The establishment of this unique interwar complex was not simple and was accompanied by numerous discussions, as well as media battles and incitement campaigns. The museum "Das Rote Wien im Waschsalon" offers a permanent exhibition on Viennese architecture from the 1920s and 1930s. It is open every Thursday from 1 PM to 6 PM and every Sunday from 12 PM to 4 PM. This exhibition is located in the original communal laundry facilities and consists of four thematic areas, including the history of "Red Vienna" from 1919 to 1934 and municipal housing construction. On Saturday, September 11, a special program is prepared at the residential complex Karl-Marx-Hof, and entry to the exhibition "Das Rote Wien im Waschsalon" will be free from 12 PM to 4 PM.
Karl-Marx-Hof and the civil amenities of the complex The complex of apartment buildings was designed around large courtyards. It offered 1,382 apartments (now there are 1,272) for approximately 5,000 people. The civil amenities were more than thoroughly planned - in addition to communal spaces, the complex had two central laundries with 62 washing places, two baths (20 bathtubs and 30 showers), two kindergartens, a mother's advice center, a youth home, a library, a dental clinic, an insurance office with a treatment room, a pharmacy, a post office, medical offices, cafes, spaces for political organizations, and 25 shops.
