The Berlin New National Gallery is one of Mies's last realizations. It demonstrates the constant consideration of the giant of 20th-century architecture and a symbolic post-war return to his homeland. The use of the building as a gallery is controversial. David Chipperfield is now attempting to remedy this, having started a three-year renovation of Mies's museum last year with a budget exceeding one hundred million euros. A competition for the new Museum of the 20th Century (Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts am Kulturforum) took place in close proximity to Berlin’s Cultural Forum, in which the Basel office Herzog & de Meuron ultimately prevailed. The tense atmosphere of the competition is described by the fact that 1,082 offices decided to withdraw from the selection process in protest against the actions of the competition committee. In the end, 460 teams submitted their proposals, of which only ten advanced to the regular competition. Perhaps the fact that they did not want to reveal their cards to the main competitors in an ideological competition played a role, or it was simply too great a challenge to build near an iconic building. Compared to the amount allocated for the renovation of Mies's museum, the new building will have only double the budget. A total of 42 renowned offices participated in the main competition.
