On Wednesday, April 22, the results of the architectural competition for the new Niederösterreich gallery were announced, where art collections (valued at over 1.5 billion euros) owned by the federal state of Lower Austria will be exhibited over an area of 3,000 m². The new museum is set to be built next to Peichl's Karikaturmuseum directly across from the Kunsthalle by Adolf Krischanitz, thus increasing the annual attendance of the art district to 160,000 visitors.
The jury, chaired by Elke Delugan-Meissl, selected from sixty teams, with the proposal from the Vorarlberg office Marte.Marte Architekten emerging victorious after two rounds. The previous work of the brother duo Bernhard and Stefan Marte has been characterized by compact cuboids and massive materials, so the concavely curved façade made of shimmering aluminum scales was a surprise for many. The dancing sculpture is distinctive and also elegantly organizes the urban space. The lower floors, with their low arches, directly face the street, while the rooftop terrace offers distant views. The project also successfully found the ideal balance between built-up areas and open spaces. The transition between the individual rotated floors is completed by the scale-like façade reminiscent of a dancer's sequined dress.
The total costs are estimated at 35 million euros. Construction is set to begin next spring, and the museum's completion is planned for 2017.
