In the last week, news of two new museums by the Swiss duo Herzog & de Meuron has appeared on the internet.
The first is an extension of the London Tate Modern, which they also designed during its 2000 renovation. The final plans for the new ten-story extension will be available this autumn, and a final decision on the construction will be made in early 2007. Ten new exhibition rooms will be built at the southern end of the historic turbine hall. A space for various performances will be created in one of the oil tanks that previously served the power plant. Mayor Ken Livingstone has promised £7 million from the London Development Agency. However, a total of £215 million will be needed for the new extension. Info>
The second project is the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island (NY). H&deM visited the studios of local artists (both living and deceased) while designing the new museum and studied the specifics of the spaces and nuances of light on Long Island. The result is a composition of exhibition rooms reminiscent of chaotically grown village buildings. Construction is expected to begin this autumn. Info>
