The Zurich Children's Hospital is the largest facility of its kind in Switzerland. However, its current location in the Hottingen district is inadequate in terms of spatial requirements and infrastructure, so this year the hospital decided to announce a two-round architectural competition for a new hospital building in the Lengg district.
Of the 25 pre-selected teams, 19 offices submitted their projects for the first round. Six firms (weberbrunner architekten, bauzeit architekten, Stücheli Architekten, and Baumann Roserens Architekten, Loudon & Habeler, Zwimpfer Partner) advanced to the second round, from which the project by the Basel firm Herzog & de Meuron was chosen in early May.
The winning project by H&deM consists of two different buildings that interact with each other. The main hospital building located on the southern part of the site is a three-story cube, contrasting with the circular structure of the teaching and research center. The jury highlighted “the optimal functionality of the building, resource-efficient use of space and areas that will guarantee high economic efficiency and cost-effective provision of performance and services. The composition of both buildings successfully meets the demanding urban conditions and integrates the complex into the delicate environment of the protected psychiatric clinic in Zurich.”
The overall appearance of the building is softened by the recessed upper floor and the cladding of the facades with wooden slats. The large footprint of the hospital is interrupted and softened by a series of inner courtyards and light wells, which bring daylight into the interior and offer space for green areas.
Each floor of the hospital will have its own use: the ground floor will contain nursing wards, therapeutic rooms, and a restaurant, the second floor will house doctors' offices, and the top floor will consist of patient rooms.
The circular structure of the teaching and research center suggests that everything here 'revolves' around scientific work. Above the level of the lecture halls and seminar rooms, six floors of laboratories and offices for researching scientists rise.
The start of operations for the new hospital is planned for 2018, with total construction costs estimated at 550-600 million Swiss francs.
