China has started the construction of a new large airport in Beijing

According to Chinese authorities, the new airport is a necessity because the growing demand for travel to and from China exceeds the capacity of existing airports, AFP reported today.
    The current Beijing International Airport is the second busiest in the world - and is also among the airports where passengers most frequently experience delays. According to a report from 2013, less than 20% of commercial flights departed on time. About 42% of the planes departing from Beijing were delayed by 45 minutes or more.
    The new terminal is expected to be operational within five years and should handle 72 million passengers annually, Chinese media reported today. The cost is estimated at 80 billion yuan (approximately 293 billion crowns).
    The airport is to be located about 50 kilometers south of the city center and is intended to relieve the international airport in the northeast of the city. That airport handled over 83 million passengers last year. The second Beijing airport, Nanyuan, was once owned by the military and has limited capacity.
