Frankfurt am Main - The prestigious award for the best high-rise building, the International Highrise Award (IHA), has this year been awarded to the Torre Reforma skyscraper in Mexico City's capital. The building, which is 246 meters tall, was designed by Mexican architect Benjamín Romano and his studio LBR&A. The jury was impressed not only by its unconventional exterior shape, which resembles an obelisk and is inspired by Aztec culture, but also by its innovative technical solutions, which allow the skyscraper to withstand strong earthquakes, according to the DPA news agency.

The skyscraper in Mexico received the award in strong competition with 35 other high-rise buildings from 15 countries. Ultimately, the judges selected from five finalists, which included designs from renowned architectural firms such as Herzog & de Meuron and Ole Scheeren.

"This award is particularly valuable to me because I am receiving it from my colleagues - architects, engineers, developers - who know how to appreciate not only the building itself but also the other aspects associated with it, whether they are financial, ecological, structural, or legal," said the designer of the winning building.

The IHA has been awarded every two years since 2004, organized by the German Museum of Architecture (DAM). The winner also receives a cash prize of 50,000 euros (approximately 1.3 million crowns). Two years ago, the award was given to the studio BIG for their design of the residential building VIA 57 West in New York's Manhattan.
