Three years ago, New York architect Daniel Libeskind served as a visiting professor at the Leuphana University in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony. As part of his teaching activities, he conducted a series of scientific seminars where he refined his project together with students from various fields and expanded the resulting concept.
For a long time, funding for the project estimated at 60 million Euros was uncertain, until at the end of last year, he managed to secure the blessing of the foundation board, and now the building's financing is expected to be completely free of private investors. In addition to the federal state of Lower Saxony, the district of Lüneburg, and the European Union, the Lower Saxony Jewish community also contributed 6.9 million Euros. In the spring, the foundation stone will be laid, and by 2014, a 38-meter high metal trapezoid with a pitched roof should rise in front of the windows of the surrounding historic buildings made of clinker brick. The ambitiously designed lecture hall, along with associated student dormitories and guest accommodations, is also meant to symbolize the transformation of the university, which, as one of the first higher education institutions in Germany, divided its study program into bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
