Madrid - A monumental 90-meter tall rotating obelisk will be built in Madrid, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. The new landmark of Plaza de Castilla will be made of bronze and steel, announced representatives of the Caja Madrid bank, which is financing the construction.
The obelisk, which is Calatrava's first project in the Spanish capital, will be located in a modern business district in the north of the city. According to the designer, 12 rings should rotate around the central axis of the building, giving the impression that the obelisk is undulating. Installation of the giant column will begin in November and is expected to last a maximum of 18 months.
Fifty-six-year-old Spaniard Santiago Calatrava is not only an architect but also a sculptor and painter. His office, which has several branches across Europe, has completed dozens of significant projects.
As a specialist in bridge design, Calatrava has recently made headlines with his project for a new bridge over the Canal Grande in Venice, which is currently under construction. He is also the author of the tallest residential building in Scandinavia, the 190-meter skyscraper named Turning Torso in southern Sweden's Malmö, as well as an art museum in Valencia. His project also won the preliminary international competition for the design of the tallest building in the world, which is set to rise in Chicago.
