London - Buckingham Palace, one of the most famous landmarks in London, is set for renovation. It will take ten years and is estimated to cost £369 million (11.6 billion CZK). The government approved the funding for the construction work today, stating that there is no time to delay. British media report this. Significant alterations have not been made to the building since the end of World War II.

The renovation will mainly involve electrical wiring, plumbing, and heating. Most of this infrastructure dates back to the late 1940s. Solar panels will be installed on the palace roof, which is expected to contribute to reducing the palace's operating costs by £3.4 million (107 million CZK).

The reconstruction of the Queen's residence will begin in April next year. According to the official statement, Queen Elizabeth, along with her husband Prince Philip and other members of the royal family, will reside in the palace during the renovation.

If the upcoming renovation goes according to plan, the next one is not expected until 2067, when Prince William will be 85 years old. This means five years younger than his grandmother Elizabeth is now, noted the AP agency.

Buckingham Palace was built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham. In 1761, it was purchased by King George III for his wife, Queen Charlotte. Since then, the palace has been referred to as the Queen's House. However, it only became the main royal residence in 1837 with the accession of Queen Victoria. Although the palace survived World War I unscathed, it was targeted during World War II on several occasions. As a result, for example, the palace chapel was destroyed.

The palace has 775 rooms, 78 bathrooms, and the largest private garden in central London. Millions of people from around the world come to see it every year.
