Bratislava - Residents of Bratislava have opted for a green and gray color combination in an online vote selecting the color scheme for the reconstructed oldest bridge over the Danube. This was indicated by the results of the voting, which were reported today by the director of the mayor's office, Ľubomír Andrassy. However, the final decision regarding the appearance of the Old Bridge will lie with the city councilors.
In the poll on the city's website, after excluding duplicate votes and spam, 2,452 people expressed their preference for the two-color variation of the bridge, accounting for more than half of the voters. The other two proposals, either a green or gray coating, received much lower support. Only a fraction of the more than 400,000 residents of the metropolis participated in the poll, which lasted more than two weeks and ended on Monday.
In the past, the Old Bridge had a green surface finish. One of the landmarks of Bratislava was built at the end of the 19th century. Initially named after the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, it was later named after Milan Rastislav Štefánik, one of the co-founders of Czechoslovakia, and after World War II, it was called the Red Army Bridge.
Due to its poor technical condition, the bridge has been closed to all vehicles in recent years. In a competition for its restoration last year, the Czech construction companies Eurovia CS and SMP CZ, along with the Slovak company Eurovia SK, succeeded, obtaining a contract worth 70.58 million euros (1.9 billion crowns). Currently, workers are dismantling the bridge. Later, due to the requirement to improve navigation conditions on the Danube, two pillars of the bridge will be demolished and replaced by one new one. As part of the extensive reconstruction, a tram line will be built that will connect the city center with the Petržalka housing estate. The work is expected to be completed next year, which is a condition for the European Union to reimburse the majority of the project's costs.
