In the area of the new exhibition center in the northwest suburbs of Milan, EXPO 2015 is currently taking place, the most significant showcase of architecture this summer. This colorful spectacle of peculiar shapes is contrasted in the city center at Piazza Castello by a pair of imposing white volumes “Expo Gate“ reminiscent of ancient stepped pyramids. The empty transparent design (arising from a competition) by Milanese architect Alessandro Scandurra is a temporary pavilion that serves not only as an information center and ticket pre-sale from early May to the end of October but also as an open platform for hosting lectures, exhibitions, and social events related to this year’s theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life“. Both white pavilions are symmetrically placed along the axis of the Castello Sforzesco, the former residence of the Duke of Milan, whose defense system was designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The new gate references the main gate of the World’s Fair that took place in Milan in 1906. The designer aimed to highlight the World’s Fair “without the gate having to play a central role”. The temporary pavilion represents a “clever combination of simple building elements made from fully recyclable materials”.
