Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Visual Smog (But Were Too Afraid to Ask)

One of the projects that the Pěstuj prostor association and the Visual Smog initiative in Plzeň are bringing closer to the public this year, in relation to the increasingly resonant topic of visual smog in public spaces, is an open-air exhibition, situated in the park area of Šafaříkovy sady – close to the giant "bench," which has recently caught the attention of Plzeň residents. The exhibition's opening, significantly contributed to by students from the local Secondary School of Commerce, Applied Arts, and Design, will take place on June 2 at 6 PM.

"The focus of the exhibition is the photographs by students who documented and visually commented on the current state of visual smog in Plzeň. Their shots captured advertising spaces of various sizes and scales, shop window displays, signboards, advertising benches, as well as entire facades or tarpaulins of trucks," stated the exhibition's author Yvona Kovářová from the Visual Smog initiative in Plzeň. The students from "Nerudovka," led by teachers Tereza Šobrová and Tereza Pejřimovská, also gave the exhibition a graphic dimension. Based on an open call, contributions were also made by the broader public. The photographs presented at this exhibition, along with images that did not make the selection, are recorded on the so-called map of visual smog.

Furthermore, the exhibition presents two conceptual documents through which the city actively committed to addressing the problem of visual smog, which were approved by the Plzeň City Council in 2020: the Manual for Advertising in Public Spaces and the Manual for the Signage of Businesses. "The creation of these documents, aimed at regulating and cultivating advertising through recommendations rather than repression, was advocated by the Visual Smog platform in Plzeň. Both materials, which follow similar studies conducted in Brno, Znojmo, Prague, and Ostrava, were prepared by the Department of Concept and Development of the City of Plzeň,” added Petr Klíma from the organizing association Pěstuj prostor.

"Similar to the Pěstuj prostor association, the Visual Smog platform in Plzeň also aims for the creation of a high-quality and cultivated urban public space that does not lose its function, form, and symbolic significance under layers of advertising messages, and in which architecture does not become a cheap carrier of banal information. We firmly believe that this exhibition will contribute to that goal," Yvona Kovářová concluded.

The exhibition will be open until June 30, 2021. Its organization has been supported by the statutory city of Plzeň, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the State Fund for Culture of the Czech Republic, and the Plzeň Region.
