Karlovy Vary - An exhibition capturing the original work of Michal and Šimon Caban for the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary was opened this evening at the Karlovy Vary Gallery of Art. It is a look back at 18 years of their work for this prestigious showcase and will last until August 25.

"We are exhibiting a selection from the archive of these years. Because we present things that were once carried out live, these are edits from individual years presented on television screens. We have supplemented them with a selection of props and costumes. Several panels document the process of our creation - namely sketches and plans. However, these are definitely not works of art," said Michal Caban to ČTK.
At the time he received the offer for this work from Jiří Bartoška, he was thirty-five. As the exhibition documents, they certainly do not lack ideas.
"When this year's opening ceremony ended, Šimon came to me with the idea of how to approach the next year," added Michal Caban, who is the coordinator of accompanying events. His brother, who is two years younger, is the festival architect. Both are known under the authorship brand Cabani and have successfully been active in the Czech cultural scene for nearly thirty years. They once defined their creativity in performances of the Ballet Unit Křeč. The show, created at that time in amateur conditions, hinted that they drew from glaring pop culture while cleverly caricaturing it.
Years ago, they participated in the staging of the opera Candide at the State Opera, which was composed by Leonard Bernstein based on Voltaire's book. They jointly filmed the movie Don Gio and contributed scenographically and choreographically to the awarding of domestic music prizes.
"The film festival is like a car, whose parts are replaced when they wear out. Then there are parts, like the solid frame of the car, and they are precisely that," said Marek Eben at the vernissage. He pointed out that both live surrounded by the most beautiful dancers, often scantily dressed - yet they maintain orderly marriages. "Only people of high moral value can achieve that," he added about those who have been raising their own bar at the Karlovy Vary showcase for eighteen years.
