Opening: September 9, 2005 The exhibition will run until October 23, 2005 Non-standard opening hours: 17:00 - 22:00
Projects and realizations of the progressive Vienna studio querkraft have been on display in the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery in Prague since September 9. This is the first comprehensive presentation of the studio, which will also be showcased at the Architecture Gallery in Brno from November 7 to December 4. On Friday, October 6, 2005, at 18:00, a lecture by members of the studio will take place at Raiffeisen Building Savings Bank at Koněvova 99 in Prague 3.
The architectural studio querkraft architekten was founded in 1998 by Jakob Dunkl (*1963), Gerd Erhartt (*1964), Peter Sapp (*1961), and Michael Zinner (*1965), graduates of the Technical University in Vienna. Their portfolio includes a wide spectrum of buildings from industrial objects to administrative buildings, shops, and family houses, as well as low-cost housing. Their projects are often recognized in architectural competitions. In 2002, they received the Austrian Architectural Award Bauherrnpreis, in 2004 the prestigious British award for young European architects "Young Architect of the Year," and the City of Vienna Prize. The studio represented Austria at the Biennale in Venice.
The focal point of the unusually conceived exhibition is a central bar element, which, alongside Austrian wines and coffee, also offers architecture. The presentation of projects takes place on six projection screens, allowing visitors to choose their own pace of the exhibition. The presentation offers a fairly brisk description of individual projects supported by schematics, drawing documentation, photographs from construction, and the final appearance of the building, which helps visitors understand the challenging process of creation. Projects often arise based on non-standard requirements and in very close cooperation with clients: "The foundation of our work lies in communication. We seek an unconventional approach to architecture, and since each client and each space and each commission is different, our projects always look different."
The architects work with minimal text - which is replaced here by short mottos: Life: the center of everything is life - architecture gains its meaning through use. Concept: discovering essence - architecture is content embedded in form. Passion: pushing boundaries - our work is a labor of love. Thoughtfulness: challenging questions - breaking free from convention. Added Value: solving the problem is essential, the added value is a challenge. Poetry: poetry is the soul of architecture - function is a given. Proportionality: luxurious or economical - achieving maximum productivity. Responsibility: no excuses - fulfilling a commission does not absolve us of responsibility to the public.
The graphic representation of the projects is pleasantly simple. The sketches are filled with humor and playfulness, with figures present that give the projects a human dimension. They work with color and physical models, while almost no popular visualizations are found today.
The projects themselves utilize unconventional materials, such as transparent rubber from refrigeration technologies (DOR - conversion of an office for a film company in Vienna, CZE - reconstruction of an apartment on Czerningasse in Vienna), silage bales of straw as an exhibition system and advertising medium in public space (LL - installation of the exhibition "Landluft / air of the countryside" in Vienna) or brushes from washing lines (KH - installation at the exhibition "A Foot in the Door" at the House of Artists in Vienna). The motif of the object as "screens" - shop windows is common (TRE - operational building for the company Trevision in Grosshöflein, VIT - operational building for the company Vit in Asperhofen, DOK - duplex house in Klosterneuburg, SPS - family house in Vienna). Natural motifs are also repeated (MQK - café and restaurant in Vienna with a bar counter in cowhide - what do nature protectors think?, LEE - rental houses in Leebgasse in Vienna with motifs of grass on glass railings of balconies, TWI - public space renovation for a business park in Vienna). Interior ventures such as PRA - Prachner bookstore in Vienna, which interestingly addresses the baroque reading arena, ZA1 and ZA2 - dental offices in Vienna, cannot be overlooked.
The clicking of switches and excited whispers from visitors clearly express positive feedback on this unusually conceived exhibition. The catalog summarizing works from 1998 - 2006 (?) is available in Czech - black and white and in color German-English versions.
