We cordially invite you to the exhibition Miroslav Melena: In the Service of Theatre, which will be opened on Monday, April 28, 2014, at 5:30 PM in the Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Sokolov. The exhibition will run until May 14, 2014.
The work of the prominent Czech scenographer and theatre architect Miroslav Melena will be showcased at the retrospective exhibition In the Service of Theatre, featuring dozens of works previously seen by audiences primarily at the Prague Studio Ypsilon, in the Naive Theatre in Liberec, the National Theatre, the City Theatre in Brno, and other well-known venues both at home and abroad. The exhibition will be divided into two parts: scenographic and architectural. The curators of the exhibition are Helena Albertová and Josef Vomáčka.
Miroslav Melena (*1937 Louny - †2008 Prague) is undoubtedly one of the most significant Czech scenographers and theatre architects of the second half of the 20th century. He was one of the last students of Prof. František Tröstr at DAMU in Prague; together with Jan Schmidt, he contributed to shaping the poetics of the now legendary Studio Ypsilon theatre, first in Liberec and later in Prague. Melena also collaborated with other theatres at home and abroad, not only as a scenographer but also as a director. From the 1970s, he expanded his work to the field of theatre architecture; initially focusing on covering summer stages and platforms, he later designed renovations and reconstructions of theatre interiors. Notable projects include the Archa Theatre and Fidlovačka Theatre in Prague, the City Theatre and Reduta Theatre in Brno, the Horácké Theatre in Jihlava, not to mention a number of works in the former Yugoslav countries.
