Pub U Hada Gallery VI PER, 1st–31st October 2017 Opening 1st October 2017, 19:00 Concept: MAK! (Kateřina Vídenová, Adam Wlazel)
Pub U Hada is an exhibition project by the architects from the MAK! studio. The theme is a reflection on the gradual transformation of urban districts like Karlín, and a reminder of traditional local businesses, bars, and pubs that are rapidly disappearing. In October, the gallery will turn into a local pub, a temporary community space for local residents and visitors to meet. Beer, soda, utopenci, mariáš, darts, table football, and a daily program – discussions, concerts, theater, readings, exhibitions, debates, lectures, screenings, and every Sunday a neighborhood feast where you can also bring your own culinary treats for a shared table. During the last week of September, interested parties can participate directly in the establishment of the pub through a workshop with the architects. Gathering and lounging in pubs has been a regular part of life for centuries and represents a significant social phenomenon. Public opinion was formed in pubs, politics was discussed, resistance was born, and culture thrived. In recent years, the pub environment has been changing relatively quickly. Places where people go to talk, express their opinions, or listen have started to differentiate significantly by price, generation, or social status. The traditional regular and his local pub are often looked upon today with a degree of disdain and inappropriateness. The disappearance of classic pubs from urban districts and peripheries goes hand in hand with dramatic transformations that many places – and Karlín is no exception – are currently undergoing. Quality development and its related quality of life, good distance and accessibility to the center, maintained public space, vacant building plots, all create pressure on property and land prices. In this environment, the classic pub has little chance of surviving with affordable beer.
The pub will be open daily from 17:00 to 22:00 throughout October 2017.
MAK! – Mobile Architectural Office is the name of the project by architects Kateřina Vídenová and Adam Wlazel. Their ideas and activities always directly address the current possibilities of urban life. They co-founded the initiative Letná Sobě!, whose activities triggered a wave of civic “sobě!” initiatives across the country. In 2013, they decided to venture out with a caravan to the countryside to explore the situation of the contemporary Czech village and attempt to collaborate with local residents. In 2016, they reached as far as Scotland with their caravan.
