Dušan Samo Jurkovič

The Zvolen Castle presents a new exhibition Home at Dušan Jurkovič's, which highlights the work of the prominent architect, designer, ethnographer, and publicist. In a stylized showroom, you will see a collection of furniture that Jurkovič designed for his bedroom and study, accompanied by ceramics, textile works, photographs, and drawings. The opening of the exhibition for the public will take place on Thursday, August 24, 2023.

Dušan Jurkovič is an iconic figure in 20th-century Slovak architecture. The creator of the Štefánik Mausoleum on Bradlo, however, worked not only in Slovakia, and architecture was not his only interest. He was also a furniture designer, ethnographer, publicist, and lived and worked in Moravia for nearly 30 years. His wide range of interests is captured in the new exhibition Home at Dušan Jurkovič's in the form of a stylized interior, similar to what Jurkovič did at the beginning of the 20th century at exhibitions of architecture and applied arts in his house in Brno-Žabovřesky. The individual design elements of the exhibition refer to various fields that Jurkovič dedicated himself to throughout his life.

"Jurkovič's furniture, similar to what he did, is complemented here with ceramics. It is also an opportunity for us to delve into the gallery collections of applied arts and showcase works from the manufacturers in Holíč and Kremnica, Italian and French ceramics, as well as the work of ceramist and jug maker Ferdiš Kostka, with whom he jointly received the title of national artist in 1946," say the curators of the exhibition, Viera Kleinová and Jana Švantnerová from the Slovak National Gallery.

Other elements of the interior, such as tapestries, remind of Jurkovič's connection with the Moravian Tapestry Manufacture in Valašské Meziříčí. The model of the villa at Rezka alludes to Jurkovič as an architect and is also a reference to his personal life – he met his future wife Božena while designing the villa.

In the exhibition, the author’s notebooks titled Práce lidu našeho, in which he mapped traditional Slovak building and crafts, will be available in digital form, allowing the audience to also recognize his interest in ethnography. In addition, Jurkovič's work and efforts were related to heritage protection. "What connects this author with Zvolen Castle is an unrealized project of the reconstruction and adaptation of the castle from the 1920s, as well as the realization of an apartment building on Štefan Moyzes Street, which draws from the architecture and details of the castle," adds Denis Haberland, co-curator of the exhibition from SNG.

Dušan Samuel Jurkovič (1868 – 1947)
The most significant figure in 20th-century Slovak architecture. He studied construction in Vienna. He practiced with Blažej Bulla in Martin and then with Michal Urbánek in Vsetín. From 1899 he worked as an independent architect in Brno. After 1918, he settled in Bratislava. He devoted his entire life to studying folk architecture, publishing the results in the notebooks Práce lidu našeho. He also showcased his early architectural work from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which ranks among the best works of European Art Nouveau. During World War I, he worked in Western Galicia, where he designed and realized around thirty military cemeteries. The culmination of this period of his work was the design of the mausoleum for General Štefánik on Bradlo.
