Jan Kaplický

Prague - The exhibition about architect Jan Kaplický will be open for viewing throughout the summer. The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art has extended it until the end of August due to high interest. Weekly, three thousand visitors come to see it, said Terezie Kaslová from the DOX Centre to ČTK. The exhibition at DOX has been running since April and was originally set to end on August 2.
The exhibition does not present Kaplický solely as the author of the unrealized National Library; it also showcases models of other buildings, designs for jewelry, and fashion.
The exhibition's concept was prepared by Kaplický's friend and colleague - architect Eva Jiřičná. She conceived it as a journey through his life and work. In the spirit of the idea that the architect perhaps never worked with a right angle, the exhibition hall is filled with rounded and curved objects. A tall panel wall curved into a wave dominates the space, displaying Kaplický's projects in photographs and sketches in chronological order.
Display cases contain models of buildings and functional objects, complemented by a pink carpet often used by the author. Part of the exhibition includes projections representing Kaplický's lecturing activities, fashion designs, and significant sources of inspiration for his work.
Kaplický's studio Future Systems became known for its futuristic, even utopian designs. The future was a central theme for the studio's work as early as the 1960s and 70s. Initially unrealizable shapes of buildings and objects soon began winning architectural competitions and were brought into reality.
The first significant building by Kaplický was the media center at Lord's Cricket Ground, for which Future Systems received the prestigious Stirling Prize. Another significant building is the Selfridges department store in Birmingham, which The Independent included in its list of the most important modern buildings in the world. The exhibition showcases not only public buildings but also private houses and interiors of fashion stores.
