Prague - The phenomenon of abandoned industrial structures is the focus of the audiovisual work The Grief of Misfit Cathedrals, which is installed at the Kunsthalle Prague gallery. People will have the opportunity to see it for the first time as part of the Signal festival, which will run from Thursday to Sunday, and then until January 14. The installation consists of large-scale projections of places and concrete skeletons that, due to their scale and proportions, resemble ancient sacred architecture.
The installation, which was presented to journalists today by the organizers, was created by Lunchmeat Studio. The studio has long focused on working with new technologies and their application in the field of audiovisual, interactive, and immersive installations. Since 2010, Lunchmeat has been organizing the Lunchmeat Festival, which combines the world of alternative electronic music with experiments in contemporary audiovisual culture.
The project The Grief of Misfit Cathedrals from Lunchmeat Studio is formally built on technically precise 3D scans of locations surviving outside the rhythm of the city. In addition to the sound accompaniment, the installation is supplemented by piles of real debris from concrete skeletons that seem to emerge from the canvas. According to the organizers, the resulting audiovisual installation raises questions related to the memory of places, the aesthetic value of decay, or the current transformation of the cultural landscape.
The melancholic atmosphere of the immersive film format enhanced by multi-channel spatial sound evokes the inspiration of the Japanese concept of mono no aware, or acceptance of the transience of things and finding beauty in decay. A similar emotion is also present in works of European Romanticism, whose plots often unfold against the backdrop of ancient or medieval ruins.
Kunsthalle Prague is involved in the Signal festival, which will offer a total of 20 installations on two routes. The first route will start at Klárov in Kunsthalle and will lead across the river and Mariánské Square to Republic Square. The second route will start at Florenc and will traverse the whole Karlín area up to Invalidovna. Ten installations along both routes will be freely accessible, while seven are interior installations for which people must purchase tickets.
