Participants in the Young Architect Award architectural exhibition will this year seek solutions on how to revitalize the peripheries of our cities. Both students and emerging architects under 33 years old can submit their works. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2017. The competition results will be announced, as tradition dictates, at the international construction fair FOR ARCH.
Contestants should not only develop their own project but also identify and explore problematic peripheries within or on the outskirts of cities. These are proposals on how to transform dysfunctional cities and municipalities, how to revive abandoned places in transportation corridors, or so-called edge places. Participants can choose a location from those recommended by partner cities, or one of their own that they consider problematic and meets the competition criteria.
The expert jury will be led by Petr Stolín The expert jury, headed by Petr Stolín (PETR STOLÍN ARCHITEKT), the holder of the first Czech Architecture Award 2016, will assess the selection of the project theme, concept and contextuality of the solutions, quality of architectural/urban design, contribution to environmental quality, sustainability, innovation, and originality of the work. This year, the jury also includes city architect of Litomyšl Zdeňka Vydrová, Jan Opočenský (ov architekti), David Mareš (třiarchitekti), and Josef Pechar (Foundation "Nadání J., M. a Z. Hlávkových").
"At first glance, this topic may seem very easy. However, after a more thorough search into what exactly periphery is, we do not arrive at a definitive conclusion. The very interpretation of this definition by the contestants may bring surprising results. And it is precisely this ambiguity that attracts me to this topic," adds Petr Stolín.
New in 2017: CEMEX Award “The aim of the CEMEX Award is to support authors who come up with innovative solutions in the use of concrete constructions and materials in line with the theme of the competition, as concrete constructions are often associated with urban peripheral areas (transport corridors, housing estates, etc.). Innovative solutions can bring concrete to the periphery in other new contexts and qualities,” says Vesselin Barliev, Public Affairs and Communication Manager, CEMEX Czech Republic.
