The Prague 8 district has initiated the process of selecting an architect for developing a design and project for the revitalization of the main public space in the Ďáblice housing estate.
Aware of the importance of this housing estate space and the complexity of the assignment, considerable care was devoted to preparing the brief. In the summer of 2015, a student urban design-architecture competition was organized as the first step. A total of 36 proposals were submitted, from which the jury selected 3 best entries and awarded 2 others. All works were exhibited directly in the public space of the square and also in the local community center, and were subsequently presented in a public discussion. Inputs from local residents, entrepreneurs, and property owners were then transformed by the client into an amended brief.
The goal is to create a lively and pleasant space for everyday life. The open flexible area of the square will allow for a whole range of activities, from casual everyday meetings and short stays to various social, cultural, and sports events. Summer activities can expand from the interiors of buildings into the open space of the square. In the designated part of the area between the shopping center and the metro station, a space for regular markets will be created.
The currently announced tender is in two stages. In the first round, a commission composed of representatives of the Prague 8 district and independent experts will select a total of 3 teams based on their previous references and price offers. In light of the Prague 8 district's effort to support the entry of young professionals into practice and also considering the fact that the addressed space deserves a fresh perspective, unburdened by routine, the commission will select one team that does not have to meet portfolio requirements in full, i.e., may document projects of smaller scale or of a different nature (the so-called wild card). These 3 teams will develop conceptual studies, which will subsequently be publicly presented and on the basis of which a developer for follow-up stages of project documentation will be selected. The goal is to implement the revitalization in 2017.
