INITIAL CONDITIONS

Winnipeg is the administrative city of the Canadian province of Manitoba and experiences harsh winters, with outdoor temperatures dropping below minus 40°C. A river flows through the city, where the frozen riverbed in an area called "The Forks" hosts the longest skating rink in the world, measuring nearly ten kilometers.

The task for the third year of the international architectural competition "Warming Huts v.2012" was to design shelters, or rest areas, for weary skaters along this skating trail. The competition was officially announced through the Canadian Architecture Association and met all the requirements of an international competition.

WINNING DESIGN BY MJÖLK ARCHITECTS

The design by the studio mjölk was chosen by the jury as one of three winning designs, along with proposals from studios in New York City and Norway. Another participant who will realize their shelter is none other than architect Frank Gehry, who was directly invited to participate in the design and realization by the competition organizer.

The essence of the mjölk architects' approach is the design of the "POLAR HEN" machine, which travels along the frozen river next to the skating trail and uses a drill-pump-nozzle system to bore a hole in the ice, insert a hose, and subsequently pump river water into a shower system that releases water onto an inflated balloon from above, thereby creating transparent ice igloos. Skaters can take a moment to shelter in these from inclement weather. Completely transparent ice igloos can further be enriched (with colored lights, fluorescent dyes, etc.) to create works that straddle the boundaries of architecture, design, and art.

As part of their victory in the competition, the mjölk architects are invited to Winnipeg at the end of January 2012, where the realization of all the winning designs will take place over the course of one week. The Czech team comprises six architects from the mjölk studio and artist Richard Loskot. They will be accompanied by a professional film crew led by director Lucie Králová, who will be filming a documentary about the entire event.

The January expedition of the POLAR HEN could take place thanks to the support of LICON, a Liberec manufacturer of designer radiators, to whom we owe great thanks for promoting Czech architecture abroad.
