The Czech Railway Administration announced the winner today in Jihlava of the open architectural-urban design competition for the new high-speed railway terminal Jihlava VRT. Out of a total of 25 architectural studios that participated in the competition, the design by the Franco-Czech consortium AREP ARCHITECTES - monom won. Construction is set to begin in 2029.

The jury praised the winning design for the way the new transport hub integrates into the landscape while taking into account significant landscape elements in the broader surroundings. From a transport perspective, it highlighted the clarity of all transfer connections in the terminal and the very well-designed bus station. Given the expected capacity of the terminal of up to 6,000 passengers daily, or up to 300 passengers per hour during peak times, the jury appreciated the short transfer routes between the various modes of transport, which the design effectively addresses.

"After the Prague East and Roudnice nad Labem terminals, the Jihlava terminal is now the third in line to know its future form. Like in the previous cases, the Jihlava terminal will also serve as a transfer hub between the high-speed railway, local public transport, and other modes of transport. This will enhance the accessibility of job opportunities and education while supporting life in individual regions, fundamentally altering the general perception of concepts such as distance or countryside," says Minister of Transport Martin Kupka.

The competition focused on integrating the terminal into the landscape and improving public spaces, as well as the railway viaduct over the D1 motorway and related structures. The Jihlava terminal will serve as a key transfer hub in the Vysočina region between the high-speed line (VRT) and public and personal transport. The main criteria for selecting the winning proposal were therefore the quality of urban, transport, landscaping, and environmental solutions, as well as economic efficiency of investment costs.

"The new terminal will support both long-distance journeys and daily commuting within the framework of fast railway connections. The integration of VRT into the conventional railway network and the commitment to achieving climate neutrality further show that this is a project of far-reaching significance not only for Vysočina but for the entire Czech Republic," stated the General Director of the Czech Railway Administration Jiří Svoboda.

Thanks to the prominent location of the new terminal near the regional city and the D1 motorway, it can be expected that upon completion, there will be a significant development of the surrounding area, reflected in the growing economic performance of the entire region. Up to 118 trains pass through the Jihlava terminal daily. High-speed connections will stop here twice an hour, allowing travel to Prague in 52 minutes and to Brno in just 36 minutes.

"In our proposal, the terminal aims to be a minimalist yet ecological landmark with a low energy footprint. It adapts to the site's topography and utilizes the existing infrastructure to minimize additional construction," explained architect Igor Hobza, representative of the winning consortium AREP ARCHITECTES - monom.
