Liberec - In the competition for the construction of the year by Karel Hubáček, the Liberec region is looking for the construction of the decade. The competition, which aims to promote quality architecture and construction projects, has been held in the region for 20 years, with this year's edition won by the renovation of the Jirásek Theatre in Česká Lípa, which has won over both the expert jury and the public. The public can now also decide on the construction of the decade through an online vote. People can vote for one of the selected projects until February 28, 2025.

"I am curious about the results. Together with representatives of the partners who meet in the preparatory committee of the competition, we selected 29 representative nominees from various categories through voting from all the awarded projects over the last twenty years. Of course, I have my favorites, and we'll see if I hit the mark," said Jiří Ulvr (Mayors for the Liberec Region), the regional councilor for development, to ČTK. The ceremonial award presentation will take place in May next year at the announcement of the winners of the 21st edition of the competition.

The organizers have selected the best projects that have succeeded in previous years for the competition for the construction of the decade. Among them is the Jirásek Theatre in Česká Lípa, which is currently leading in the voting, as well as other new buildings and renovations. Nominees include the new headquarters of the glass company Lasvit in Nový Bor, the sports and recreational area Maškova zahrada in Turnov, the iQLandia science center in Liberec, the rectorate building of the Liberec University, the renovation of the ski jump in Lomnice nad Popelkou, and the conversion of the municipal baths into the Regional Gallery in Liberec.

The competition for the construction of the year in the Liberec region has been tradition since 2004, and since 2019 it has been named after the author of the iconic Ještěd hotel and transmitter, the Liberec architect Karel Hubáček, whose birth centenary was celebrated in February. In the last five editions, the main award has always gone to projects that arose from the revitalization of brownfields, such as the Jirásek Theatre, the renovation of the Liebieg Palace in Liberec, or the former rectory in Vratislavice. Applications for the next edition of the competition will be accepted starting November 1.
