VELUX Czech Republic, Ltd., a supplier of roof windows, blinds, and shades, announces the fifth year of the successful competition for Family Houses with Living Attics. The competition is intended, like previous years, for students of secondary construction trade schools. The Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports has taken the patronage over the fifth year of the competition.

“We are very pleased with the interest of students in this competition and the continuously increasing quality of the submitted proposals. The inventive and original ideas from students are inspiring for us as well. We are already looking forward to what surprises the participants will bring in the fifth year of the competition,” stated Ing. Jana Mašatová from VELUX. The aim of the competition is to support the creative work of young future architects and designers and to enable further education in the area of living attics, where roof windows are used as the main source of light. Participants in the competition will also have the opportunity to share and confront their experiences related to this topic.

For the fifth year of the competition, students can register no later than Tuesday, December 30, 2008, through an online form on the VELUX website – www.velux.cz. The deadline for submitting the final competition designs is April 30, 2009. Projects for family houses that use roof windows as the main source of daylight can participate. The expert jury will assess the projects according to the following criteria: overall architectural and technical solution of the building, technically correct design of roof windows with regard to ensuring optimal lighting, ventilation, and adherence to the principles of building physics, and the correct specification of VELUX products.

In the first round of the competition, a jury composed of representatives from the participating schools and VELUX will select and award six of the best designs. The first three designs from each school will then proceed to the nationwide round. In the second - nationwide - round, a jury composed of independent experts and one representative from VELUX will convene. Together they will evaluate the designs and determine three absolute winners, who will share a total cash prize of 30,000 CZK. In addition to the main prizes, the jury may also award special recognitions.

The ceremonial announcement of the winners of the fifth year of the Family House with Living Attic competition will take place in June 2009 with the participation of the expert jury, winners, and their professors or classmates.
