Two-round public anonymous architectural design competition Organizer: City of Planá Determiner of competition conditions: Ing. Pavel Nutil Competition Secretary: Marie Plešáková Reviewer: Ing. Jiří Ťupa The subject of the competition is the development of an architectural proposal for the reconstruction of the cinema building into a multifunctional cultural facility. The focus of the competition is the transformation of the existing cinema building in the town of Planá into a multifunctional cultural center that would serve the residents of the town for hosting public and private events. The client will utilize the building for:
A. Film screenings. B. Dance parties, concerts, and balls. C. Theatre performances. D. Lectures, discussions, council meetings, exhibitions, seminars, conferences E. Exhibitions. F. Community events, leisure activities, creative workshops for the public.
Competition date: April 15 – August 30, 2013 Jury: Ludvík Grym, Martina Portyková, Pavel Nutil, Kateřina Melenová, Karel Vrzala; substitute: Kristina Ullmannová Total awards and prizes: 150,000 CZK
1st prize (70,000 CZK): Ing. arch. Pavel Buryška, Ing. arch. Barbora Mikitová, Ing. arch. Simona Ledvinková Jury assessment: We appreciate the refinement in the second round of the competition regarding the entry areas. The proposal presents a reasonable and adequate solution proportional to the town's needs. Visualization - the materials of the hall are not completely refined. We appreciate the opening of the central axis - the view into the hall from the square. Beautifully refined facade. Appropriate solution for elevating the hall with a variable floor. We recommend considering whether to use higher differences. The lighting bridge was resolved more practically in the first round.
2nd prize (50,000 CZK): Ing. arch. Martin Rusina, Ing. arch. Martin Frei Jury assessment: We do not understand the reason for the significant increase of the hall - it seems to be missing in the visualization from the square. Refined facade solution towards the square. It is uncertain whether it will be accepted by heritage conservationists. Illogical, awkward solution for the disabled entrance. The relocation of the restroom to the center of the layout allows for the release of the front part of the building, but on the other hand, it prevents variability of the halls. The passability of the small hall seems impractical. The ramps for the stage lights in the hall are insufficient. Positive aspects include the upper lighting in the foyer and the clever closing of the hall windows with shutters. Detailed processing of the report and budget. We appreciate the reflection on dividing the building into parts considering operational costs. Increased reward (14,000 CZK): Ing. arch. Libor Hromádka, cooperation: Ing. arch. Bohdan Frnka, Jiří Kaňák, Martin Kaňák Jury assessment: It exceeds the investment possibilities of the town. The question is whether the cause is the extension to the street Na Valech. The layout is clear. Appropriate activities are oriented towards the square. Positive is the lighting of the hall and foyer with large openings. The booth is spatially adequate but is not connected to the hall in a modern way. Difficult control of the lights in the ceiling. We appreciate the barrier-free entrance from the back of the building.
Reduced reward (8,000 CZK): Ing. arch. Petr Synovec, Bc. Martin Josek, Bc. Jakub Sládeček, Bc. Eduard Sojka Jury assessment: Did not adequately reflect the comments. The entrance area with a bar and café remains confusing and cramped. There was no positive change from the first round. The marking of demolished structures in the main drawing is confusing. The path to the main hall around the small hall and stairs is cramped and unfortunate. We appreciate the lighting of the hall from two sides, as well as the lighting of the foyer. Good technological bridge, but the stairs on it are a drawback. The jury is not sure whether closing the rear courtyard with a wall is appropriate. Costs seem likely underestimated.
Reduced reward (8,000 CZK): Ing. arch. Jiří Ksandr, Vít Šimek, Štěpán Řehoř - H3T architects Jury assessment: The jury does not consider the restrooms oriented towards the square to be appropriate. The foyer space was opened compared to the first round of the competition. The utilization of the back courtyard seems moderate. The visualization of the openings to the hall from the interior and exterior is likely contradictory. The use of wooden platforms for elevating the audience seems anachronistic and labor-intensive. The service balcony is a positive aspect. The connection to the booth with only three openings is not contemporary - direct contact between technicians and the hall space is now required. A plus is the effort to light up the entrance areas and the materials and surfaces used.
