Prague – The narrower competition for the design of the Pod Marjánkou polyclinic in Prague 6 was won by the studio ov architekti. The winner was selected by a jury led by architect Petr Vávra, and the decision was approved by the council of the sixth Prague district. The modification of the healthcare facility in Břevnov is currently the largest investment project in Prague 6. The costs for the polyclinic modifications, which could start in 2025, are currently estimated by the city hall to be around 500 million crowns. This was communicated to ČTK by the spokesperson for Prague 6, Jiří Hannich.
"After nearly sixty years of operation, the polyclinic area is no longer sufficient to meet the current demands for a healthcare facility. Therefore, I am pleased that we have found a way to renovate it, practically without operational restrictions," stated the mayor of Prague 6, Ondřej Kolář.
The Břevnov polyclinic will be renovated in phases. First, a new part of the polyclinic will be built in place of the current low building, into which necessary healthcare services currently located in the main building will move. Following that, the high-rise building will be renovated. Some healthcare services will return to the main building after its renovation, supplemented by laboratories, rehabilitation, and other facilities.
Citizens of Prague 6 expressed through a municipal survey their support for the establishment of rehabilitation and physiotherapy services or a day care center for seniors and people with disabilities in the polyclinic building.
The city hall plans to preliminarily start construction of the new part of the polyclinic in 2025, according to spokesperson Hannich. The renovation of the high-rise building is expected to begin approximately two years later, according to information in the architectural competition brief. Representatives of the municipal district have previously stated that the Břevnov polyclinic is currently in poor technical condition.
The jurors of the two-phase architectural and urban design competition announced by Prague 6 in September 2021 were impressed by the proposal from the studio ov architekti for its comprehensive approach. It sensitively responds to the architectural qualities of the original building, designed by architect Richard Podzemný, considers environmental aspects, and offers clear internal spaces. The interior of the polyclinic anticipates a variable arrangement of offices and waiting rooms. Participants in the competition were tasked with proposing both the arrangement of the polyclinic during the reconstruction and the final arrangement of the polyclinic.
The polyclinic in Břevnov opened under the name Poliklinika Břevnov in 1963, when it was meant to serve up to 45,000 residents in the surrounding area. Prague 6 has managed this healthcare facility since 2006.
