Aviation Memorial of Jan Kašpar in Pardubice - competition results

1st prize (120,000 CZK): Petr Pinkas
Jury assessment: The proposal convincingly meets the competition's requirements. The urbanistically clear symbol dominates not only the forecourt in front of the Magnet but is also visible from distant views. The clean material solution enhances the laconic expression of the object. The jury appreciates the clean detailing, including the use of noble materials in the base. The wind indicator, reminiscent of the beginnings of aviation, will create both visual and auditory impressions with its movement in the wind. The jury recommends this proposal for implementation.

Jury assessment: The proposal leans towards a classic interpretation of the sculptural work. Even the modeling processing demonstrates the author's high professionalism and modern approach to figure rendering. The presented model guarantees the quality of potential realization of the work. The jury appreciates the clearly readable fact that it concerns the aviator Jan Kašpar, with the correct symbolism of the person and the propeller as a symbol of aviation chosen. The use of a light timeline with significant data from Jan Kašpar's life has a positive didactic impact. The scale of the memorial is proportionate to the public space. Direct contact with the sculpture enriches the urban surrounding pleasantly.

3rd prize (50,000 CZK): Jitka Skalická, Tomáš Rýdl, Matěj Jakoubek
Jury assessment: The proposal can be highlighted for its laconic dynamic form, which appropriately evokes the personality of the visionary aviator Jan Kašpar. The sculpture successfully masters monumental scale. The composition has the ability to dominate and complete the space of the piazzetta. However, the jury considers the use of a shiny surface on the pavement problematic. The overall demanding maintenance and especially high cost are also concerns.

Jury assessment: The proposal represents a balanced solution in terms of urban planning, concept, and material interpretation. The classic propeller motif is utilized in a phased movement form to express motion, the illusion of flight. The proposed object is proportionate in scale to the addressed space and creates a suitable artistic accent. It could serve in the future as a pleasant reference point for gatherings. A certain disadvantage of the proposed solution is the technological complexity of the water element – the need for regular maintenance and cleaning of the pool, including its surroundings. The cost of establishing the water feature and its technology seems understated.

Jury assessment: The jury appreciates the laconic concept of the airplane model on a stainless steel column. The execution of the airplane itself is unconvincing, and the proportions of the column to it are questionable.

Jury assessment: The jury appreciates the unconventional approach to the memorial theme in a fragile constructivist position. The chosen composition brings dynamic energy to the space of the tweezers, but according to the jury's opinion, there is a risk that due to its scale and subtlety, it would become insignificant.

The awarded and honored proposals will be exhibited from May 20, 2013, at Machoň's Passage on Třída Míru in Pardubice, and an exhibition of all competition proposals accompanied by a catalog will take place at the Winternitz Mills from May 30, 2013.
