Prague - The B line station Českomoravská of the Prague metro will change its appearance. The transport company (DPP) has announced a competition for its new graphic and artistic design. The reason is that the current ceramic cladding of the walls and pillars has proven to be technically unsuitable. The competition follows the planned reconstruction of the station. Ondřej Kubala from the DPP communication department informed ČTK. Interested parties can apply until December 1 of this year, and the winner will be announced by the end of March 2023. Contestants can only register electronically through the Czechdesign.cz portal.
In the competition, participants will address the design and color of the cladding on the platform, in the escalator tunnel, and in the lobby. The original removable ceramic cladding of the walls and pillars on the platform has over time proven to be inappropriate. "Ceramics in contact with water from leaks change their properties, and the supporting system, which unfortunately no longer allows for the removal of the cladding without damaging it and its reuse," said DPP board member and head of the metro section Marek Kopřiva.
During the planned reconstruction, the company will have to use new cladding, which allows it to announce the competition. Based on the winning design, the designer will subsequently work with the author team next year to finalize the reconstruction project for the station. "We will prepare the tender documentation, and in the second half of next year, we would like to announce a public contract for the construction contractor," said Kopřiva.
The winner of the competition will receive a reward of 150,000 crowns. A five-member jury will decide, which will include not only representatives of the DPP but also artists and designers, and with an advisory vote, the artist, graphic designer, illustrator, publicist, and rapper Vladimir 518.
The DPP is currently repairing, for example, the ceiling panel at the C line station Florenc. It has also started repairs on the A line station Jiřího z Poděbrad, so far while in operation. It should be closed for ten months in February 2023.
