The district of Prague 7 announces an international architectural competition for the design of its new town hall. For this purpose, it will reconstruct the building at U Průhonu 38, where it will offer its citizens, with the help of architects, the highest quality spaces for handling everyday agendas.
The new town hall for Prague 7 brings a fundamental novelty for architects – a faster and less demanding first round – which will last one month, and at the end, only one A2 format panel and a portfolio in A4 format will be submitted. From the first round, the international jury will select 8 candidates to advance to the second round. The expected announcement date is February 17, 2016.
“For the district of Prague 7, this is a historic step. Our neighborhood will finally get a town hall that corresponds to the 21st century. We want an open, efficient, and well-functioning public building for citizens, and a dignified place for employees to work daily. Competitions should be announced for public buildings, and thus we fulfill the commitment of the 2013 referendum,” says Mayor Jan Čižinský.
“We expect the winning design to deliver a building with a modern expression, operational efficiency, and sensitivity in the detailing of the internal arrangement that meets the requirements for quality operation of the office for both the public and employees. We realize the complexity of the task, as we operate within the limits given by the possibilities of reconstruction, the size and shape of the building, and a limited budget,” adds councilor Pavel Zelenka.

The jury of the competition will comprise architects with rich practical and competition experience:
Silvia Brandi (IAAC, MIAS Architecture, Barcelona)
Jörn Aram Bihain (V+, Brussels)
Kamil Mrva (KMA, Kopřivnice and Prague)
Lukáš Kordík (gutgut, Bratislava)
Lukáš Kohl (architect and developer, Prague)
Magdalena Rochová (Jaroušek Rochová architects, Prague) — alternate

For Prague 7, the selection of designs will include
Mayor Jan Čižinský
Councilor Lenka Burgerová
Councilor Pavel Zelenka — alternate

The new town hall for Prague 7 brings a fundamental novelty for architects – a faster and less demanding first round. From the organizer's perspective, Igor Kovačević describes the situation: “I greatly appreciate the decision of the representatives of Prague 7 to organize an architectural competition for the reconstruction of a public building, which is quite a unique practice for us. I firmly believe that the competition will attract architects: in the first round, we present the concept of how the building will function in a minimalist format – with an A2 poster and portfolio. From this conceptual phase, the international jury will select 8 authors, who will further develop their designs in greater detail in the second round of the competition. With this reduction of the submitted material, we respond to architects' calls to avoid investing unnecessary amounts of energy into uncertain outcomes in the competition.”
Three best designs will be awarded. The prizes are set at 550,000 CZK for the first place, 350,000 CZK for the second, and 250,000 CZK for the third place. A sketch fee of 350,000 CZK in total will be awarded to 5 designs that do not receive any prizes.
