The Czech Architecture Award, a competitive exhibition of the Czech Chamber of Architects, is taking place this year for the fifth time. As in previous years, it is open to architectural realizations constructed on the territory of the Czech Republic in the last five years. Architects can submit their works until April 1, 2020. Traditionally, the credit for the Czech Architecture Award is supported by a prestigious seven-member international jury.

International Expert Jury
The work of architects will be evaluated by seven knowledgeable foreign experts. Among them is landscape architect, urban planner, and academic Henri Bava (France), co-founder of the Agence Ter studio operating in Paris, Karlsruhe, Shanghai, and Los Angeles. He focuses on the fusion of architecture, urbanism, and landscape architecture in diverse projects for parks, public spaces, territorial plans, and urban planning. Another jury member is architect Alessandra Cianchetta (United Kingdom), who practices in her own studio based in London and Paris. The studio works on projects in the fields of architecture and urbanism, with a special interest in the regeneration of urban areas and cultural or administrative buildings. Cianchetta is also active in academia. Joining the Czech Chamber of Architects (CCA) jury 2020 is architect Jeanne Dekkers (Netherlands), who runs her studio in Delft, working on a wide range of projects – designing educational facilities, residential buildings, interior design including furniture design, as well as territorial plans. Dekkers is very active in both academic and professional fields and is also involved in publishing activities. The jury includes architect and theoretician Gillian Horn (United Kingdom), who is currently engaged in academia and research, and is also a main contributor to the magazine of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Until last year, she worked for 15 years at the Penoyre & Prasad studio. Another juror, architect Csaba Nagy (Hungary), works in his own studio Archikon Architects, which handles a wide array of projects – renovations and new constructions of public, commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. He is currently a board member of the Hungarian association of architects. The expert jury also includes architect Štefan Polakovič (Slovakia), co-founder of the GutGut studio, whose realizations have been awarded in Slovakia with the ARCH Award, Dušan Jurkovič Award, and the CE-ZA-AR Architecture Award four times. Polakovič is also a co-founder of the successful Bratislava festival DAAD. The seven-member jury is completed by architect Jeroen van Schooten (Netherlands), who operates in his leading Dutch studio V Architectuur based in Amsterdam. Additionally, he is publicly engaged within professional associations.

After the registration closes, the jurors will select up to 50 nominated works by the end of May 2020. From this number, the jury will subsequently choose approximately 5 to 10 works that will receive the honorary designation CCA Finalist, and from these, they will select the main prize winner. An award will also be given for exceptional achievement, with the selection made by the Academy and the CCA Board, and partner awards, whose laureates are proposed by the partners of the CCA. Who succeeded in this year’s edition will be announced at the festive gala evening, which will take place on November 24, 2020, at Forum Karlín.

Who can apply for the Czech Architecture Award?
In the competitive exhibition, which intentionally does not have any established categories, authors can submit their works completed in the territory of the Czech Republic in the last five years in 2020. This includes completed buildings constructed from January 2015 to December 2019. Works that reached the nominee shortlist in last year’s and the year before’s edition are excluded from participation in the competition. Architects can submit their realizations through a simple online form; participation in the exhibition is not associated with any costs for the competitors.

Academy of the Czech Architecture Award
In addition to works submitted by authors themselves, the Academy of the Czech Architecture Award can also initiate the nomination of notable buildings. It is also responsible for nominating exceptional achievements in the field of architecture.
