Biography
He studied at the CK Industrial School in Brno and worked at the military construction office in Würzburg. He further studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Karl von Hasenauer and Otto Wagner. In the design office of Otto Wagner, he met J. M. Olbrich, with whom he founded the Wiener Secession in 1897, from which he left in 1905 to establish the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903 with banker Fritz Wärndorfer and Koloman Moser. Since 1899, he taught at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule).
