Prof. PhDr. Pavel Kalina, Ph.D. will present the topic of the beginnings and present of monument care in Egypt. In the second half of the 19th century, interest in the culture of the pharaohs not only grew, but increasingly, so did interest in younger monuments from the Christian and Islamic eras. Central European architects significantly contributed to this. Their legacy is alive even today, as the demands of modern society place increasing pressure on historical architecture.

Prof. PhDr. Pavel Kalina, Ph.D. is an art and architecture historian and a long-time educator at the Institute of Theory and History of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of CTU. He himself states his focus as the architecture of the early modern period, iconology, and the significance of the investor in the history of architecture; however, his professional reach is very broad, as evidenced by his extensive publication and lecturing activities. Among the published books, we can at least mention the latest one, Deep City. Modern Metropolis as the Second Rome, which addresses the inexhaustible wealth of signs that make a city a city. In addition, Prof. Kalina actively expresses his views on current cases concerning art and architecture from his expert position.
