Matyáš Chochola: Ctnosti a neřesti naší doby / 300 let poté - výstava v EPO1
In the exhibition space EPO1 in Trutnov, the vernissage of the exhibition titled “Virtues and Vices / 300 Years Later” will take place on December 12, 2024. The exhibition will present sculptures made of printed concrete created by contemporary artist Matyáš Chochola. These are postmodern, ambivalent interpretations of Braun's Allegories of Virtues and Vices in Kuks. The entire series of 12 sculptures thus showcases the fundamental principles and archetypes of Chochola's sculptural work. The exhibition will be open to the public from December 13 and will run until the end of March 2025; the presented works are part of the international sculptural project Sculpture Line. The curator of the exhibition is the editor-in-chief of Vogue CS, Danica Kovářová.
''Provocateur, shaman, alchemist, and one of the greatest eclectics of contemporary Czech art, Matyáš Chochola once again remixes and utilizes artistic appropriations. Not infrequently, he draws inspiration from past centuries, and now, in a temporal spiral, he returns 300 years back to the iconic work of Matyáš Bernard Braun and the theme of the twelve baroque Virtues and twelve Vices in Kuks. As an artistic chameleon, Chochola almost surprises with a shift in technique, medium, or theme at every presentation of his new works. This is happening now too – with the motif and execution of the allegories, he continues to play purely in his own way, in unexpected materials and forms. He has begun experimenting with concrete 3D printing. Even his first experiments with this parametric sculpture evoke ancient totems or menhirs, but Chochola goes even further. He seeks a contemporary equivalent to scenes that carry some internal appeal and resonate through emotions. After 300 years, he presents us with unique memorial sculptures.
