WHAT DO MAJIT SPOLEČNÉHO JATKA, PLATO, BAUHAUS, AND MIES VAN DER ROHE HAVE IN COMMON? OR THE PATH FROM PERIPHERY TO THE CORE OF THE CITY
A terrain lecture by historians Martin Strakoš and Romana Rosová
On Thursday, April 25, 2024, the jury of the European Mies van der Rohe Award for contemporary architecture will decide whether to award the prestigious recognition for the conversion of the Ostrava slaughterhouse into the Plato gallery according to the design by Polish architect Robert Konieczny and his studio KWK Promes, or to one of the other four finalists from various countries in Europe. We will celebrate this exceptional event with a terrain lecture, during which the past, present, and future of the mentioned location will be discussed.
The move to the finals is already a historic success for both Polish and Czech architecture and for Ostrava. At the same time, it is an opportunity to think more deeply about the further development of the site. We cannot perceive the gallery merely as an escape. The competition jury also considered how the entire surrounding area would develop, how the integration of the awarded building into the urbanism of the city center would be addressed, and how this opportunity would be used to transform the former periphery into a new and architecturally valuable part of the core area of Ostrava. Currently, discussions are taking place regarding the urban connection of the location to the surroundings, bridging for pedestrians from Fifejdy, as well as the future of the adjacent Bauhaus building and the planned development in the vicinity of the slaughterhouse.
Historians and heritage conservationists Martin Strakoš and Romana Rosová, as some of the initiators of the preservation of the slaughterhouse and those who participated in the structural-historical survey of the building, will introduce you to both the past of this valuable part of the city and its present as well as the possible variants of future development.
