The organization Open House Praha is hosting a concert in collaboration with the international chamber music festival EuroArt Praha and with the kind participation of Autoklub of the Czech Republic to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the birth of architect Pavel Janák and also Bohuslav Martinů, whose birth will be 132 years ago on December 8th. The Stamic Quartet will perform works by Janák's contemporaries – Bohuslav Martinů, Vítězslav Novák, and Josef Suk. The concert Unity of Place and Time in Music will take place on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at 7:30 PM in the clubhouse of Autoklub of the Czech Republic. The introductory speech about the architecture of the building and Janák's work will be given by the Executive Director of Autoklub ČR Richard Gironi.
Pavel Janák (1882–1956) is among the most significant architects of the first half of the 20th century in our country. During his studies, he was a student of Josef Zítek in Prague and Otto Wagner in Vienna. He collaborated with architect Jan Kotěra, bridge engineer František Mencl, and architect Josef Gočár. “Among Janák's most famous realizations in Prague are the Adria Palace, Hotel Juliš, and the Hussite Church in Vinohrady, buildings that we opened to the public again this year as part of the 8th edition of the Open House Praha festival,” says the director of Open House Praha, Klára Veselá, adding: “Due to great interest, we have included tours of some buildings in our year-round program of guided walks, and we are excited that we can allow interested parties to once again peek into the beautiful representative spaces of Autoklub ČR through the concert.”
Pavel Janák is also the author of the clubhouse of Autoklub ČR, a modern social palace, which is now a cultural monument. “Janák designed a reconstruction of the building in purist style in the 1920s, which involved the addition of another floor, a basement, and Smetana Hall. Autoklub ČR, whose history dates back to 1904, has been located in these representative spaces since 1929,” adds Michal Šedivý, co-organizer of the event from Open House Praha. Outside Prague, the crematorium in Pardubice is also worth mentioning. In the late 1930s, Janák was also appointed as the architect of Prague Castle.
The event will also commemorate the anniversary of Bohuslav Martinů, as it is exactly 132 years since the composer’s birth on December 8. “The basic idea of the concert was not only to commemorate the significant anniversaries of architect Pavel Janák and composer Bohuslav Martinů but also the thought of offering listeners as an added value the opportunity to discover the treasures of our architectural creation in a mutual dialogue with music,” says the director of the EuroArt Praha festival, Josef Kekula, adding: “Martinů's seventh string quartet is a perfect example of the composer’s neoclassical effort, while Novák's rarely performed second string quartet stems from different musical origins, but it is an extraordinary masterpiece, and from Josef Suk, early compositions will be heard that affirm his extraordinary talent.”
On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the birth of Pavel Janák, the organization Open House Praha has also prepared a limited edition of paper Christmas ornaments inspired by architectural motifs that can be found on the buildings of Pavel Janák. The ornaments are an original work by graphic designer Dita Krouželová. The gift envelope contains 6 Christmas ornaments with ribbons and instructions for making your own. They will be available for sale directly at the concert and in advance from the end of November on the Open House Praha e-shop.
