Schindler House is considered by many to be the first Modernist house ever built. The one-storey dwelling has tilt-up concrete walls, a flat roof and opens to the garden through sliding panels. Since the Californian climate is so mild, the bedrooms are actually open air lofts that sit atop the building. When occasional rain appeared, canvas could be rolled down over the openings. The house served as Schindler's home and studio, and for a while also housed his friend and rival, Richard Neutra. The MAK Center for Art and Architecture currently occupies the house, where they regularly put on events.
