The new winery and brand wine shop is located in the Cudgegong River Valley, in the Apple Tree flats, near the town of Mudgee (New South Wales). The building was designed with references to traditional agricultural buildings and opens up to its surroundings; it aims to complement the current image of a relatively young wine brand.
It is designed as a rural excursion venue (belvedere) among the surrounding vineyards and mountainous landscape. The tasting hall and terrace create one space and offer views all around.
The building combines architecture, wine, and food into a unique experience. In the Mudgee wine region, dominated by rustic buildings, the modern expression of architecture in the case of the wine cellar is completely exceptional. This building deepens the relationship between architecture and landscape.
The relatively small triangular plot limited the location of the house. The original study explored four different sites. Ultimately, we chose the location on the edge of a terrain elevation, as it offered the best views of both the vineyards and the beautiful valley while being visible from the road.
The brief required a tasting hall, a commercial kitchen used for daily wine tastings and other functions, offices, and service areas. The design had to cater to various groups of wine lovers and their needs. Since its opening, events such as weddings, birthday celebrations, as well as formal tastings have been held here. For larger celebrations or during winter months, the spacious terrace can also accommodate standard textile tents.
The two main consultants were a structural engineer and a landscape architect. The former was firmly integrated into the team, taking into account, among other things, the limits of a clearly defined budget. The frame of the building is made of steel and wood. The landscape architect worked more freely, respecting our core requirements but in a firm connection to the client's brief.
The brief was very clear: contemporary architecture that combines the best possible architectural solution with the needs of the wine and food business. The feedback from clients and others has been very positive, and the wine sales have also benefited from the combination of architecture and good marketing.
