On the banks of the Portuguese Alqueva reservoir (250 km²), the largest artificial lake in Western Europe, there is a holiday home that you can rent as part of the Silent Living project for an amount of 500-800 euros/night. The family house, designed by the Lisbon studio Aires Mateus, almost entirely hides in the ground and perfectly blends in with the surrounding nature. You can stay in one of the three double rooms. The house, surrounded by forests and meadows, offers views of the endless water surface while simultaneously providing safety and protection for its guests. While the trio of bedrooms oriented towards internal atriums protects against the outside, the living room and the kitchen with dining area share an outdoor covered space reminiscent of an ancient ruin or a prehistoric cave overlooking the artificial lake. Additionally, nearby stands the medieval castle of Monsaraz, behind whose walls lies one of the most picturesque Portuguese villages.

Faced with the boundless extents of the Alqueva lake, the house requires a centre: a protected courtyard embracing the water.
It uses the terrain to cast a dome that covers the social areas and is the life centre of the house. An inverted dome intersects it and creates an opening that lights the space, shaping its precise geometry and limits. The bedrooms open onto circular patios.
Amid a wide natural landscape, the scale of the house is that of the patios and superior dome. They are the sole visible elements, painted in radiant white.
